A decades-old Bangor law firm has merged with Rudman Winchell, one of the state’s most prominent legal groups.
Gross, Minsky & Mogul, which operated for four decades in Bangor, closed its doors and merged with Rudman Winchell on Oct. 1. Clients transferred to the new firm, according to a news release.
The merger is the most recent shift in the area’s law firms. Eaton Peabody closed its doors in May 2025 after 85 years in business. A group of eight lawyers from the firm started Viridian Law in Ellsworth and other lawyers joined Verrill, a Portland-based law firm, which opened an office in Bangor.
The transition has gone remarkably well in the weeks since the merger, Rudman Winchell partner Michael Hockenbury said, describing it as a seamless unification of the two groups.
Steve Mogul and Ed Gould, lawyers who formerly worked at Gross, Minsky & Mogul, started practicing law together in the 1980s after they graduated law school, Gould said. Hockenbury approached him about joining the firms, which allowed the focus to remain in the Bangor area, Gould said.
Combining the firms creates more capacity for clients, Hockenbury said. Bringing in experienced lawyers allows the firm to invest more in mentorship for younger lawyers as it works to retain staff. The goal is to continue serving the community for decades, as it has for the last 100 years, Hockenbury said.
“We’re very happy with the way things have gone and excited to see where it takes us,” he said.
