MACHIAS, Maine — The town of Machias is seeking volunteers for a community-wide cleanup event May 14-15.
Dubbed “Machias Community Pride Spring Cleanup Weekend,” the event will allow Machias residents to dispose of any trash, including large items, for free.
Town Manager Christina Therrien also hopes to line up volunteers to clean up a portion of a street, park or cemetery and is looking for some folks who have the means to haul large items.
“We just want people to participate,” Therrien said Tuesday. A large group could make a real difference, she said.
The idea came up at the March 23 selectmen’s meeting when Selectman James “Doc” Whalen asked what could be done about certain residents stockpiling trash around their residences.
The selectmen decided to organize the cleanup weekend to allow all residents the opportunity to beautify their surroundings.
