ROCKLAND, Maine — The Knox County Regional Communications Center will host an open house 1-3 p.m. Saturday, April 17, at its 301 Park St. facility.
Tours of the center will be provided by staff for the first time since the grand opening on March 5, 2013. Visitors will get a chance to see the state-of-the-art communications center where all 911 calls are processed.
The staff also will answer questions about career opportunities in the field and what it is like to be an emergency dispatcher.
A fire truck, ambulance and assorted police vehicles also will be available for viewing in the parking lot, and public safety personnel will be on hand to answer questions about their equipment and professions.
Weather permitting, Lifeflight of Maine will have one of its helicopters there as well.
There will be displays for viewing inside the County Emergency Operations Center. The Knox ARES-RACES Emergency Amateur Radio group and Pen Bay Amateur Radio Club will be staffing the mobile communications trailer and offering information about the local club and how to become a licensed amateur radio operator. Several members of the club work closely with public safety officials during major events to provide a secondary means of communication.
Hot dogs, chips and soda will be served while supplies last.
