THOMASTON, Maine — A local representative to the Rockland-area school board announced her resignation Thursday night but said she has seen significant improvements during the past two years.
Noreen Mullaney said her job required more time commitment from her which was going to make it difficult for her to get to the Regional School Unit 13 board meetings. Mullaney was appointed by the Thomaston selectmen in August 2014, succeeding Marla McGeady, who had resigned earlier that month.
Mullaney was then elected in June 2015 to a full term.
She said when she first got on the board she was embarrassed by the atmosphere on the board.
“Now, I’m so glad it’s turned in a positive direction. It’s exciting,” she said.
Board Chairman Steve Roberts praised Mullaney for being a patient, thoughtful board member.
Thomaston has two representatives on the 10-member board. Mullaney’s seat will be filled during municipal elections on June 14.
Though she stepped down from the school board, Mullaney has taken out nomination papers to run for one of two available seats on the board of selectmen.
Incumbent Selectman William Hahn also has taken out papers for one of the seats. The other incumbent, Mona Stearns, has not taken out papers, and no other candidate has stepped forward.
The deadline for candidates to file papers to get on the ballot is May 2.
