ROCKLAND, Maine — A 49-year-old Jay woman made her initial court appearance Friday in Knox County Unified Court after allegedly smuggling Suboxone into the Maine State Prison.
Rebecca J. Sawyer was arrested this week and charged with felony trafficking in prison contraband after an investigation into the smuggling of Suboxone into the prison in Warren. On Friday, bail was set at $500 cash.
In October 2015, Sawyer was barred from the prison because she refused to cooperate with prison investigators, according to the affidavit filed by Maine Department of Corrections investigator Lidia Burnham.
In December, a greeting card sent to an inmate was intercepted and determined to contain Suboxone strips. According to the affidavit, the card was sent by Sawyer, who had obtained the Suboxone from an unidentified man in Lewiston.
The investigator has recommended that the prisoner who arranged for the drug to come into the prison also be charged.
