LIMINGTON, Maine — A Maine State Police bomb squad detonated an active military-grade smoke grenade found along the side of Route 11 in Limington Saturday.

A Limington resident found a suspicious device while walking along Route 11 Saturday morning. The resident took the device home and summoned the York County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies determined the device was a military grade M-18 smoke grenade that appeared to be altered with electrical tape. After deputies determined the smoke grenade was possibly still active, a state police bomb squad was summoned to detonate the grenade safely.

Nobody was injured but police said these devices are unstable and are best left to a bomb squad to handle. The sheriff’s office recommends that anybody who finds a suspicious device ought to leave it where it was found and summon the police.
