READING, Pa. — Reading’s Roman Quinn delivered a bases-loaded RBI single in the bottom of the 13th inning as the Fightin Phils rallied for a 5-4 win over the Portland Sea Dogs on Sunday afternoon at FirstEnergy Stadium.
The Sea Dogs beat Reading 6-2 Saturday night.
Angelo Mora (4-for-6) led off the 13th inning with a triple off Heri Quevedo. Portland intentionally walked the next two hitters, setting up Quinn’s long fly-ball single over the head of center fielder Henry Ramos.
Reading’s bullpen worked seven frames, allowing just one run. Edubray Ramos pitched the final two innings to secure the victory.
Right-hander Teddy Stankiewicz was strong in his Double-A debut for the Sea Dogs, a Boston Red Sox affiliate. The Texas native worked six innings on just one run. Reading’s Ricardo Pinto took a no-decision in his first Double-A outing, giving up three runs over six frames.
Trailing 1-0, Portland tied the game in the fourth inning on a solo homer by Henry Ramos. The Sea Dogs scored single runs in four straight innings to lead 4-1 through seven. Ramos added a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Wendell Rijo’s first Double-A hit was a homer and Cole Sturgeon knocked in a run with a single.
Reading cut the deficit to 4-3 in the eighth inning. With two outs, Jorge Alfaro singled and Dylan Cousins hit a two-run homer. The Phils tied the game with two outs in the ninth inning on a wild pitch by Rob Wort.
Sturgeon, Aneury Tavarez and Jantzen Witte each had two hits for the Sea Dogs.
On Saturday night, Kevin McAvoy was solid in his Double-A debut for Portland despite a cold night with temperatures in the low 30s.. The right-hander worked five innings, giving up only two runs on a single to Christian Marrero in the third. McAvoy finished his outing with two perfect innings and earned his seventh win in his last eight starts dating back to last year.
Portland scored five of six runs with two outs, striking for two runs in the first off losing pitcher Nick Pivetta. Rainel Rosario picked up his first RBI in the Red Sox system with a single to left. With two outs, Aneury Tavarez laced a run-scoring single over the shortstop.
The two-out party continued in the fourth inning off Pivetta. Portland had five straight two-out singles: Jordan Weems, Tzu-Wei Lin, Mike Miller (RBI), Cole Sturgeon (RBI) and Jantzen Witte (RBI).
Chandler Shepherd worked two perfect innings in his Double-A debut and Luis Ysla pitched the final two frames for his first Double-A save.
The Sea Dogs scored their sixth run on a wild pitch by Joely Rodriguez. Portland received a hit from eight of nine starters.
