WARREN, Maine — A teenager was critically injured Tuesday afternoon after police said his speeding vehicle crashed into a tree and became airborne.
The names of the driver, 17, and sole passenger, 16, were not released because they are juveniles, according to Knox County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Tim Carroll.
The crash occurred shortly after 1:30 p.m. on Finntown Road. The 17-year-old was driving a 1991 Toyota Corolla north on Finntown when he lost control on a curve, Carroll said. The car sideswiped a large tree, became airborne and crushed part of the roof of the vehicle when it landed, he said.
Emergency crews from Warren Fire and Rescue and Waldoboro Emergency Medical Services had to remove the driver and passenger who were trapped inside.
The two were taken to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport. The driver suffered life-threatening injuries and the passenger suffered minor injuries, according to Carroll. The families of the youths were notified.
A LifeFlight helicopter could not be used because of the poor weather, the chief deputy said.
Carroll said the two teens had gotten out of school early because of SATs.
