THOMASTON, Maine — A 64-year-old Thomaston man is being held at the Knox County Jail, accused of sexually assaulting two children.

Robert J. Robinson was arrested Wednesday and charged with two counts of Class A gross sexual assault, two counts of Class B unlawful sexual contact and two counts of Class D unlawful sexual touching, according to Chief Deputy Tim Carroll of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office. The most serious Class A felony offenses are each punishable by up to 30 years in prison

The investigation began April 5 when a parent reported that Robinson had assaulted the children. The investigation by Detective Justin Twitchell led to him obtaining an arrest warrant from the court and apprehending Robinson.

Robinson had been the animal control officer and a traffic control officer for the town, but he has resigned those positions since the investigation began, Carroll said.

Bail was set at $25,000 unsecured and Robinson remained at the jail in Rockland Wednesday afternoon.
