OWLS HEAD, Maine — A heat lamp in a chicken coop is believed to have caused a fire Tuesday that heavily damaged an adjacent garage.

Owls Head Fire Chief Frank Ross said a chicken and four chicks were lost in the fire that was reported shortly before 10 a.m. He estimated damage to Bert and Janice Philbrick’s garage at between $7,000 and $8,000.

Crews remained on the scene at the intersection of Bayside West and Route 73 for nearly two hours.

A lobster boat that Bert Philbrick had just sold was located next to the garage but was not damaged, the chief said.

Ross said Rockland and South Thomaston crews also responded, as is protocol for a structure fire in Owls Head. The chief thanked the two towns for their assistance.
