WATERVILLE, Maine — A home on Colonial Street was heavily damaged by a fire on Thursday morning, according to officials.
The blaze was reported about 11:30 a.m. when the homeowner found heat was coming from a second-floor ceiling after two electrical breakers had tripped earlier in the day, Waterville Fire Chief David LaFountain said in a statement.
Firefighters arrived to find smoke billowing from the eves, according to the statement.
Crews were able to find an attic access but it wasn’t big enough for a firefighter. Crews were forced to open up the ceiling, exposing the fire in the attic.
Firefighters subsequently controlled the bulk of the fire, and two hours were spent ensuring it was completely extinguished. Firefighters from Waterville and Winslow handled the blaze while Fairfield covered Waterville’s station.
The homeowner and his wife were not injured.
The fire is believed to have been caused by an electrical malfunction, the statement said.
Another fire broke out elsewhere in Waterville on Thursday, according to a news release from the Waterville Fire Department.
A neighbor reported smoke and flames at 10 Oakdale St. about 5:40 p.m. Firefighters arrived and quickly were able to extinguish the fire.
There was no one home at the time of the fire, according to the release, and damage to the home was minimal.
