HOPE, Maine — A local firefighter is credited with rescuing a woman Tuesday night after her car caught fire following a crash near his home.

Laurie Conant, 25, of Appleton was traveling north at about 8 p.m. on Camden Road in Hope when her vehicle drifted into a ditch. The car drove over two culverts and struck two small trees before rolling onto its side and catching fire, according to Knox County Sheriff Donna Dennison.

The family of David Peabody, a Hope volunteer firefighter, heard the crash and he rushed outside to find Conant unable to get out of the burning vehicle. He kicked in the windshield and pulled the woman out, Dennison said.

Peabody’s wife called 911 and their son put out the fire in the vehicle.

Conant suffered minor injuries, including cuts to her face and pain in her ribs, the sheriff said.

The vehicle was destroyed.

Deputy Paul Spear is investigating the crash.
