BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — The Portland Sea Dogs took a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning, but the Binghamton Mets scored five times in their final four at-bats, beating the Sea Dogs 6-4 in an Eastern League baseball game Monday night in the series opener at NYSEG Stadium.
Portland right-hander Kevin McAvoy had a tough outing, lasting only 1 2/3 innings on six walks, no hits and one run. Binghamton took a 1-0 lead on a bases-loaded walk to Kyle Johnson.
The Sea Dogs took the lead in the fifth inning off Robert Gsellman. Tzu-Wei Lin nailed a two-run double down the left-field line and Aneury Tavarez scored on a wild pitch.
Binghamton tied the game in the sixth inning on an unearned run off losing pitcher Chandler Shepherd. The Mets took the lead for good in seventh on a two-run homer by Victor Cruzado.
Logan Taylor (2-0) worked two scoreless innings to earn the win for Binghamton.
With the Sea Dogs trailing 6-3 with two outs in the ninth, Portland third baseman Jordan Betts launched a solo homer to left field, his first Double-A homer. The homer by Betts snapped a homerless streak of 483 at-bats by Portland. Their previous homer came on April 10th at Reading by Wendell Rijo.
Beck Wheeler fanned Lin to notched his first save of the year.
