SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — What was believed to be a hazmat situation in South Portland is under control.
The South Portland Fire Department said a call came in for a possible chlorine leak around 1 a.m. Wednesday at Rigby Yard.
Firefighters initially believed there was a chlorine leak in a rail car, but officials said that was not the case.
Firefighters said it was a broken valve, and the strong smell was from residual gas left behind in the empty car, not liquid chlorine.
Hazmat crews were at the scene for another couple of hours.
