NEW HAVEN, Connecticut —Ashley Derrick’s two-run double sparked a three-run second inning that helped the University of Maine earn a 4-2 victory in the opener of a Wednesday softball doubleheader against Yale.
Yale came back to win the second game 3-0.
In Game 1, Annie Kennedy (6-4) and Erin Bogdanovich combined to scatter eight hits for UMaine (19-19). Kennedy went 4⅓ innings, giving up seven hits and two runs with two strikeouts, and Bogdanovich got the save with 2⅔ innings of one-hit relief, including three strikeouts and a walk.
Meghan Royle (RBI) and Erika Leonard each stroked a double and a single for the Black Bears. Rachel Harvey doubled home a run.
Reliever Terra Jerpbak (5-8) took the loss for Yale (16-29-1), allowing six hits and four runs in 1⅔ innings. Carlin Hagmaier (triple) and Sydney Glover poked two hits each.
In the nightcap, Francesca Casalino (4-9) fired a four-hitter, striking out seven and walking two, to lead the Bulldogs.
Laina Do hit a two-run single during Yale’s three-run first inning against losing pitcher Molly Flowers (8-10). Allison Skinner collected three singles.
Felicia Lennon doubled for UMaine while Flowers gave up five hits and three runs with four walks and four strikeouts over five innings.
UMF, Thomas split
At Waterville, Kaily Hill scattered nine hits and two earned runs and struck out 11 as the Beavers won the first game 9-4 in a North Atlantic Conference split with Thomas.
The Terriers took Game 2 by a 4-2 score.
In the opener, Alison Hamilton, Kiana Thompson and Margaret Fogarty delivered three singles and an RBI apiece to lead the University of Maine-Farmington (7-20, 4-6 NAC).
Madison Bentz (triple) and Courtney Veilleux each provided two hits and an RBI for Thomas (15-14, 8-2 NAC) behind losing pitcher Sonja Morse, who fanned 13 but surrendered 12 hits.
In the nightcap, Korrie Laren’s two-run homer in the fifth inning provided the margin of victory for the Terriers.
Jordanna Agger singled twice and Lexi Colpack hit a solo homer to support Morse, who scattered six hits and struck out seven.
Hamilton singled twice to lead UMF and Abby Burdin took the loss.
Husson 8, Bates 2
At O’Keefe Field in Bangor, Casey Lopes hit a double and two singles good for three RBIs to carry the Eagles to victory.
Lyndsay Merrill doubled twice and singled twice with an RBI and Allison Hill provided a double, two singles and an RBI for Husson (12-23). Alannah Healy earned the win with a five-hitter, giving up one earned run and fanning five.
Paige Ahlholm doubled and singled (RBI) to lead Bates College of Lewiston (5-29). Kyle Martin was the loser.
Baseball
UMF, Thomas split
At Waterville, Ben Keene and Jordan Croteau drove in four runs each to power the Beavers to an 18-5, five-inning victory and a split of their North Atlantic Conference doubleheader with the Terriers.
Thomas won the opener 2-0.
In Game 2, the University of Maine-Farmington pounded out 18 hits. Kenne tripled and singled twice and Croteau belted a three-run home run, while Dustin McCrossin posted a triple, three singles and two RBIs. Trevor Hisler doubled and singled (3 RBIs) and Jimmy Parks singled twice (2 RBIs) for the Beavers (18-13, 11-9 NAC).
Brett Sommers doubled twice with an RBI and Alex Curtis singled with two RBIs for the Terriers (19-16, 13-8 NAC). Connor Hope took the loss.
In the opener, Dominic Esposito pitched a three-hitter with four strikeouts and no walks to pace Thomas. Derek Kane belted a solo homer.
