WELLS, Maine — A motorist died in a single-vehicle crash on Monday afternoon on the Maine Turnpike, according to a spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Four other people in the car were taken to hospitals with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to spokesman Stephen McCausland.

The car struck guardrails and then came to rest alongside the road in heavy rain just before 4 p.m., McCausland stated in a news release.

A team of Maine State Police troopers was investigating the crash. One of the three southbound lanes in the area were closed to traffic during the investigation.

McCausland said identities of the crash victims likely would be released later Monday.
