WATERVILLE, Maine — Tyler Schwanz stroked a two-run home run and two doubles on Wednesday afternoon, sparking the University of Maine to a 9-3 baseball victory over Colby College at Coombs Field.
Schwanz hit a two-run homer during a four-run second inning that gave the Black Bears (11-22) the lead for good. Danny Casals collected a triple and two singles and Jeremy Pena doubled and singled (two RBIs) for UMaine.
Kevin Stypulkowski belted a two-run homer and a single and Colin Ridley drove in two runs with a double and a single for the Bears, who collected 13 hits.
Sophomore left-hander Connor Johnson (3-4) picked up the pitching win with five innings of two-hit, shutout relief. He struck out nine and did not walk a batter after Jonah Normandeau of Cumberland gave up four hits and two runs (one earned) in the first inning.
Zach Ellenthal paced Division III Colby (16-27) with a double and two singles, while Tyler Mulberry and Matt Garcia delivered run-scoring singles, both in the first inning.
Starter Will Cohen (2-3) suffered the loss for the Mules after allowing four hits and four runs (three earned) over the first four innings. He fanned three and walked one.
Colby jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Ellenthal doubled and Tommy Forese reached on an error by Casals. Mulberry and Garcia followed with consecutive RBI singles.
Normandeau gave up another single before inducing an inning-ending double play.
UMaine responded with four runs in the second inning when Stypulkowski walked and trotted home on Schwanz’s home run. Brenden Geary singled and Jon Salcedo reached on an error before moving up on Caleb Kerbs’ sacrifice bunt.
Luc Della Fera grounded out to produce a run, then Pena stroked an RBI single.
The Black Bears extended the lead in the seventh against reliever Brooks Parker. Kerbs singled, stole second and came home on Pena’s double. Casals singled to chase Parker, before Ridley pushed a run across with a groundout.
In the eighth, Ellenthal singled, stole second and scored on Forese’s single and an ensuing outfield error.
UMaine tallied three runs in the ninth on Ridley’s run-scoring double and Stypulkowski’s two-run shot.
Men’s Lacrosse
Castleton 15, Husson 5
At Castleton, Vermont, the top-seeded Spartans scored the game’s first nine goals en route to a North Atlantic Conference semifinal victory over the No. 4 Eagles at Spartan Stadium.
Sam Siegel and Taylor Swarter paced Castleton (11-6) with three goals and three assists each, while Tom Pardew provided three goals and an assist and Kyle Lutinski added two goals and two assists. Connor Kelly, Sam Frackleton, Louis Alhage and Zach Devoid chipped in a goal apiece and Peter Latulippe made 11 saves.
Brandon Corbo led Husson University of Bangor (6-10) with four goals and an assist. Trent Sell scored the other goal and Brett Martin added an assist to support Matt Martin, who posted 14 saves.
