ROCKLAND, Maine — A local man was arrested Thursday night after police say he drove drunk, struck a building and fled the scene on foot.

Rockland police responded shortly after 9 p.m. to the intersection of Union and Myrtle streets, where a 2003 Ford Taurus had struck the entrance ramp of a building. The ramp was heavily damaged and was detached from the building.

There was evidence in the car that someone had been injured in the crash, and officers began searching the area. Officers soon learned that Rockland emergency medical services had been called about a male with facial injuries at a residence on Gay Street.

The man, Jacob Ortiz, 22, of Rockland, eventually was determined to be the driver. He was taken to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport for treatment by Rockland EMS, according to a news release from Rockland police.

Following treatment, Ortiz was taken to the Knox County Jail in Rockland and charged with operating under the influence, second offense, leaving the scene of a personal injury crash and failing to report a crash by quickest means, according to police.

Rockland police were assisted in this investigation by members of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, the Thomaston Police Department and the Rockport Police Department.
