HOWLAND, Maine — Emera Maine customers in northern Penobscot and Aroostook counties experienced widespread power outages Monday because of high winds.

Large trees and branches falling onto power lines has interrupted service for more than 1,400 customers, the company reported in a statement.

Affected communities include Howland, Maxfield, Seboeis Plantation, Medford, Lagrange, Milo, Argyle, Winn and Allagash.

Service was restored to most customers by early evening. As of 9 p.m. only six customers in Bridgewater and one in Bangor were without power.
