THOMASTON, Maine — A 70-year-old Owls Head woman was seriously injured Tuesday afternoon when she was run over by her own pickup truck.

Virginia Gamage was initially taken to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport by Thomaston ambulance, according to Thomaston Police Chief Kevin Haj. She was then transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where her condition was not immediately available.

Gamage suffered serious injuries, the chief said.

She had backed her full-size GMC truck into a parking space in the parking lot of the Thomaston Wal-Mart and then got out of the vehicle. But for some reason she immediately tried to get back into the vehicle, according to Haj. Her left leg was still outside the truck when it started moving forward, the chief said.

Gamage then fell out of the truck and the rear driver’s side wheel drove over her left leg and arm, Haj said. It is unclear why the vehicle started moving forward.

The incident was captured on the store’s security cameras, he said.

Another person managed to stop the truck before it hit anything else, the chief said.

Thomaston police, fire and ambulance responded.
