A Bristol woman died and two people were injured in a head-on, two-vehicle crash on Route 1 just north of the Wiscasset-Woolwich line the afternoon of Friday, May 13.

Alice Barstow was pronounced dead at the scene, according to several reports citing the Wiscasset Police Department. Barstow was a passenger in one of the vehicles.

Henry Barstow, also of Bristol, was driving a Lincoln Town Car south on Route 1 with Jane Barstow in the passenger seat. A man in a Volkswagen Jetta station wagon was driving north and crossed the centerline, causing the collision.

Henry Barstow and the other driver were taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland. Police have not identified the other driver.

The crash was reported at 11:18 a.m. and closed Route 1 to through traffic for more than two hours, causing traffic delays.

The northbound lane of Route 1 did not reopen until shortly after 1 p.m. The two vehicles, which came to a rest in the southbound lane, were towed from the scene shortly after 2 p.m.

Motorists were encouraged to seek alternative routes as emergency responders and law enforcement officials worked to collect evidence, reconstruct the crash and clear the scene.

The crash is under investigation. A blood sample has been ordered for the operators of the vehicles, Hinton said. The Maine State Police and the Portland Police Department assisted the Wiscasset Police Department with collecting evidence from the drivers.

A Wiscasset police officer will interview both drivers, Hinton said.

The Wiscasset Police Department, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office, Wiscasset Ambulance Service, Wiscasset Fire Department and Maine Marine Patrol responded to the scene.

The Lincoln County District’s Attorney Office was also present at the scene.
