BUXTON, Maine — Embattled Maine School Administrative District 6 Superintendent Frank Sherburne resigned late Monday evening. The school board said it accepted Sherburne’s resignation following an executive session.
The superintendent and school board have faced criticism from the community after admitting to violating the district’s nepotism policy. The violation came when the district hired Sherburne’s son as an ed tech.
His son, Zachariah Sherburne, faces charges, accused of sexually assaulting a student while working in MSAD 55. The Department of Education also said Zachariah Sherburne did not have the approval to work in a classroom.
Frank Sherburne will receive a $40,000 severance package as part of his agreement to leave MSAD 6.
“The severance agreement that we settled with the superintendent will avoid a legal battle, legal costs,” Rebecca Bowley, the board chair, said.
Bowley said it will “bring closure to the matter and allow the board to turn its attention on the important issues facing our district.”
Assistant Superintendent Michael Roy will take over as interim superintendent. He spoke briefly after the announcement.
“I look forward to moving this district forward in getting past this because the community and the district need a lot of healing right now, and we have a lot of work we need to accomplish between now and the end of the year,” Roy said.
