MLB suspends Tigers manager for outburst
Detroit Tigers manager Brad Ausmus received a one-game suspension from Major League Baseball on Tuesday for his actions after an ejection during a game against the Minnesota Twins the previous night.
Ausmus’ behavior was called “excessive” and “inappropriate” during the Tigers’ 10-8 victory over the Minnesota Twins in Detroit.
MLB senior vice president Joe Garagiola Jr. also announced that Ausmus received an undisclosed fine.
Ausmus sat out Tuesday night’s game against the Twins to serve the suspension. Bench coach Gene Lamont took over as acting manager.
During the fourth inning of Monday’s game, Ausmus directed a profanity-filled verbal attack toward home-plate umpire Doug Eddings after a called third strike against Tigers third baseman Nick Castellanos.
Ausmus proceeded to take off a sweatshirt and cover home plate in a demonstration of Eddings’ interpretation of the strike zone.
After the game, Ausmus apologized for his behavior, saying he “unraveled.”
Seahawks’ Bennett has no plans for holdout
Seattle Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett isn’t going to skip training camp just because he’s not pleased with his contract status.
Bennett wants a new deal after landing his first Pro Bowl berth last season when he had 10 sacks and 18 tackles for loss. He has two years left on a four-year, $28.5 million deal he signed in 2014.
“Why wouldn’t I be at training camp?” Bennett said. “Of course I’ll be there. I’ll see you there for sure.”
Alabama’s Robinson arrested on weapons charge
Alabama left tackle Cam Robinson, the top-ranked prospect at his position in the 2018 NFL Draft class, was charged with felony possession of stolen firearms and misdemeanor possession of narcotics on Tuesday morning in West Monroe, Louisiana.
Robinson had his bond set at $750 and was arrested at a city park with Alabama defensive back Hootie Jones. Jones, who was also charged with narcotics possession, and Robinson are from West Monroe. The Quachita Parish Sheriff’s Office said the arrest happened as officers approached a car at 2:33 a.m. to investigate what they expected to be the smell of marijuana.
The handgun was spotted on the lap of the passenger and a bag of marijuana was also observed on the driver’s side floorboard. A stolen handgun was removed from beneath Robinson’s seat. Jones was also charged with possessing a handgun in the presence of narcotics.
Angels ace hopes to avoid surgery
Los Angeles Angels ace Garrett Richards opted for a platelet-rich plasma injection in his right elbow as a possible detour from arm surgery.
Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia said the decision was made by Richards, who went on the disabled list May 6. It could be several weeks before Richards knows whether the injection was effective.
Richards, 27, is 40-32 with a 3.58 ERA in 148 career games.
