A 51-year-old Vassalboro man is free on bail after police arrested him Tuesday on a nearly 2-year-old warrant that accuses him of falsely claiming his identity had been stolen in an effort not to repay a loan.
Patrick A. Day was arrested Tuesday by Maine State Police in Vassalboro on an October 2014 warrant out of Knox County for theft by deception. He was taken to the Kennebec County Jail in Augusta and released on $500 cash bail.
A court date has not been scheduled in Knox County. The charge is a felony because the amount alleged to have been stolen exceeded $1,000.
Day is president of the board of directors of Haad Enough Inc. which advocates for the families of murder victims.
According to an affidavit filed in Knox County by Thomaston police in 2014, Day took out a $2,500 loan from the Midcoast Federal Credit Union in Thomaston in April of that year. The money was put into his account and Day withdrew it, according to the affidavit.
Day’s address at that time was in Rockland.
Day then contacted the bank and said someone had stolen his identity and taken out the loan in his name. He also contacted a credit reporting agency to report that his identity had been stolen.
From February through April of that year, Day had applied for loans from nine different financial institutions until he received the loan from the credit union in Thomaston, according to the police affidavit.
The affidavit stated that Camden police were investigating a loan he had taken out from a bank in Camden. Camden Police Detective Curt Andrick said Thursday the case remains under investigation.
Day could not be reached for comment Thursday.
