CAMDEN, Maine — A 61-year-old woman who had been arrested last month for staying at an inn after being ordered to leave for not paying was arrested twice Thursday after committing similar offenses, according to police.
Leith Lende, from Durango, Colorado, was arrested Thursday afternoon by Camden police Detective Curt Andrick and charged with theft of services. Lende had stayed at the Norumbega Inn but paid with a check that had insufficient funds. Police believe, based on her prior actions, she knew that the check could not be covered.
She had written three other checks recently in Camden and Rockport for which there were insufficient funds, Andrick said. He said he expected additional charges of negotiating worthless instruments would be filed against her.
She was taken to the Knox County Jail in Rockland and released on bail.
Lende then returned to Camden and ate dinner at Cuzzy’s Restaurant but left without paying, Andrick said. She was located by Camden police Sgt. Dan Brown and arrested again for theft of services.
She was taken to the jail again. At a hearing Friday in Knox County Unified Court, bail was set at $400 cash.
At her court hearing last month, her attorney pointed out that she suffers from significant mental health problems.
Andrick said the police and town have tried to assist the woman but with no success. He could not offer more details due to privacy concerns.
