ROCKLAND, Maine — A 24-year-old Bath man who was being held at the Knox County Jail faces more charges after police say he broke another inmate’s nose and then clogged his toilet and flooded his cell.
Robert J. Carroll was charged Monday with aggravated assault, aggravated criminal mischief and disorderly conduct. He is scheduled to make his initial appearance Wednesday afternoon in Knox County Unified Court.
According to an affidavit filed in court by Knox County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Arthur Smith, the deputy was called to the jail shortly before 5 p.m. Monday after the inmate allegedly barricaded himself in his cell, flooded it, and smeared feces all around the room.
The inmate was handcuffed and moved to another cell without a toilet.
The affidavit stated that earlier in the day, Carroll also had headbutted another inmate after the two got into a discussion while watching TV about what year President John Kennedy was assassinated.
Carroll had maintained it was 1964 or 1965, but the other inmate corrected him that it was 1963. Carroll became angry and headbutted the man, breaking his nose, according to the court document.
The assault charge was elevated to aggravated level because of the extent of the injury, which will require the victim to have his nose reset.
Carroll has been at the jail since May 1 when he was arrested by a deputy after a traffic stop in Thomaston. Carroll was charged with stealing a vehicle out of Bangor, possession of a firearm by a felon and operating after suspension.
