Husson senior all-star choice
NEWTON, Massachusetts — Husson men’s lacrosse senior attacker Brandon Corbo has been selected to compete in the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association East–West Senior All-Star Game. The contest will be held at Golden Bear Stadium on the campus of Western New England University on Friday, June 3, at 7 p.m.
Corbo came away with All- North Atlantic Conference (NAC) second team, NAC All-Tournament, and NEILA All-New England Academic Team Honors. He led the team in goals (33), assists (24), points (57), and shots (141). Corbo and his 57 points were good for fifth in the conference.
USM players named All-New England
GORHAM, Maine — Senior shortstop Sam Dexter and sophomore Sam Stauble of the University of Maine have been named to the 2016 American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings NCAA Division III New England All-Region team.
Dexter, from Oakland, was named first-team, all-region shortstop. Stauble, who is from Harrison, was a third-team choice.
Dexter batted .404 with 53 runs scored, 23 doubles, three triples, five home runs, 44 RBI and 19 stolen bases this season.
Stauble made an immediate impact in the Huskies’ lineup after transferring to USM from the University of Maine, batting a team and conference-high .428 with 35 runs scored, 10 doubles, 41 RBI and 15 stolen bases.
Belgrade freshman wins NCAA opener
University of Tennessee tennis player Sadie Hammond, a freshman from Belgrade, advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division I Singles Championships with a 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 win over Clemson’s 51st-ranked Ayan Broomfield at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Wednesday.
In the first set, Hammond broke serve to go up 4-2 and took the last four games to win, 6-2.
Broomfield bounced back in the second, breaking serve for a 6-5 lead and then holding serve to even the match.
Broomfield then jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the third set before rallied, winning five straight games at one point.
The win, Hammond’s eighth against a nationally ranked opponent this season, advances her to a match Thursday against sixth-seeded Luisa Stefani from Pepperdine.
Players withdraw from NBA draft
A number of college players withdrew their name from the upcoming NBA draft and will return to school for another college season. A few reportedly will remain in the draft. The deadline to withdraw was Wednesday.
Indiana junior Troy Williams reportedly will keep his name in the 2016 NBA Draft, while sophomore guard James Blackmon Jr. has withdrawn his name and will return to the Hoosiers for the 2015-16 season.
Kentucky forward Marcus Lee will remove his name from the 2016 NBA Draft, but plans to transfer to another school. Wildcats freshman Isaiah Briscoe also announced he will return for his sophomore season after averaging 9.6 points and 5.3 rebounds in 2015-16.
Purdue power forward Caleb Swanigan is returning for his sophomore season.
Oregon stars Dillon Brooks and Tyler Dorsey will return to school after withdrawing from the NBA Draft. Mississippi State freshman guard Malik Newman will remove his name from the NBA Draft, but reportedly is considering a transfer.
