BANGOR, Maine — A Connecticut man was arrested Thursday at an Orono motel on a federal drug charge.

Raheem Childers, 31, of New Haven was charged with one count of distribution of fentanyl, according to an affidavit filed Friday in U.S. District Court.

An agent with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration found 15 small bags totaling nearly 6 ounces of fentanyl and $2,000 in cash inside a cloth drawstring bag hidden above a ceiling tile in the bathroom of a room at the Black Bear Inn, according to the court document.

“Fentanyl has effects similar to heroin and is sometimes mixed with heroin or is sold as heroin,” the affidavit said.

Information about the street value of the drug was not included in the affidavit.

Childers made his first court appearance Friday afternoon in federal court in Bangor.

He was not asked to enter a plea because he has not yet been indicted by a grand jury.

U.S. District Court Judge John Nivison ordered Childers be held without bail pending a detention hearing set on Wednesday.

If convicted, Childers faces up to 20 years in prison and $1 million fine.
