PORTLAND, Maine — Hartford’s German Marquez limited the Portland Sea Dogs to two runs in 6 ⅔ innings and the Yard Goats won an Eastern League baseball series opener 3-2 on Friday night at Hadlock Field.
Marquez walked only one and struck out five.
The Yard Goats struck for the game’s first run in the second inning on an RBI double by Dillon Thomas to score Rosell Herrera. They extended the lead to 2-0 in the third on a dropped pop-up by Aneury Tavarez in left field that allowed Raimel Tapia to score from first base.
Portland’s Teddy Stankiewicz (L, 1-4) worked his eighth quality start in nine tries this year. The righty allowed two earned runs on seven hits in six-plus innings, walking three and striking out three.
Portland reduced the deficit in the sixth inning on an RBI groundout by Andrew Benintendi to score Sean Coyle from third base and make it a 2-1 game. Hartford added an insurance run in the seventh on a wild pitch by Williams Jerez that allowed Jan Vazquez to score to make it 3-1.
The Sea Dogs scored their second run on an RBI fielder’s choice by Tzu-Wei Lin as he beat out a double-play ball to allow Jake Romanski to score. Rayan Gonzalez retired all four batters he faced in relief and Matt Carasiti earned his league-leading 14th save of the year with a perfect ninth.
