NEWBURGH, Maine — Officials continue to investigate a fire that claimed the lives of several dogs last week.
John Bott, spokesman for the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry, said the state’s Animal Welfare department is working with Newburgh’s fire department and that town’s animal control officer on the investigation.
Bott said the department is involved because of the animal component but offered no other comment.
Several dogs, the only occupants of a vacant house on North Road, died from smoke inhalation, officials have said.
The fire was reported shortly after noon May 27. The incident remains under investigation.
