WATERVILLE, Maine — Kelly Terwilliger, with coaching experience at three NCAA Division I schools and a collegiate playing career at The Ohio State University, has been named head coach of the Colby College field hockey program.
Terwilliger was an associate head coach at Indiana University and had assistant coaching stints at Ohio State and Ohio University. She starts at Colby on June 1.
“We are thrilled to have Kelly Terwilliger join the Colby family as our head coach of field hockey,” Tim Wheaton, Colby’s Harold Alfond director of athletics, said in a news release. “Kelly brings a wealth of experience playing and coaching at the highest levels, and I am excited to see her lead our program forward.”
Terwilliger graduated from Ohio State in 2009 after helping the Buckeyes to three NCAA Division I Tournament appearances. She earned master’s degrees in sports administration and coaching education from Ohio University in 2011.
“It’s a great honor and privilege to be working at Colby, and I cannot wait to get started,” Terwilliger said in the release. “I couldn’t ask for a better opportunity than to coach in the NESCAC at an outstanding institution known for its academic and athletic excellence. I’m thankful to my mentors for their continued support and am thrilled to take the next step at a college with the character of Colby’s.”
Terwilliger was at Indiana for the 2015 season before accepting the Colby job. She was with the Buckeyes from December 2011 to April 2015. She was an undergraduate student coach with Ohio State during the 2008 season.
While earning the two master’s degrees at Ohio University, Terwilliger was a graduate assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. She helped the Bobcats to two Mid-American Conference tournament and regular season titles in three years.
Husson names football captains
Rick Orio, John Smith and Ellis Throckmorton have been selected through a team and coaches vote as captains of the Husson University football team.
Orio and Throckmorton will both be entering their senior year at the Bangor-based school, and Smith will be the junior captain for the season.
“We are thrilled to have two three-year captains in Rick and Ellis and excited to have John lead us as well. They are outstanding people who are respected and effective leaders,” Husson head coach Gabby Price said in a news release.
“Each have great focus, character, passion, commitment and courage which enables them to motivate and inspire others to achieve great things. Our hope is at the end of the day that the captains will lead us but, each player can and will have a say in the direction of the Eagles,” he added.
Throckmorton is a linebacker from Bangor, Smith is a running back from Fayetteville, Georgia, and Orio is a safety who played at Cony High School in Augusta.
The Eagles will start their 2016 season on Saturday, Sept. 3, at Alfred (New York).
