SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — There could be two new hotels built by the Maine Mall in South Portland.

The city says it received two applications.

The first hotel would be a Tru by Hilton hotel, constructed next to the Double Tree and Cracker Barrel Old Country Store.

The 98-room building would be 48,000 square feet and cost more than $8 million.

Plans for a second hotel are closer to the Portland International Jetport.

If approved, the Home 2 by Hilton hotel, is expected to include 110 rooms and cost $7.4 million.

The developer also proposed an adjacent office building with possible retail space on the first floor.

“The developers that are proposing these also own and operate in the area, and they know the market and understand the growth and demand in the area, and again it’s good news for the area,” said Joshua Reny, South Portland Assistant City Manager.

Both of these projects are scheduled to be taken up by the city’s planning board in July.
