EDDINGTON, Maine — The Maine State Police’s Major Crime Unit is investigating a shooting that happened early Sunday on Hill Street that left one person in need of medical treatment, Lt. Troy Gardner said during a brief news conference near the scene.
Gardner said that the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office was called to 30 Hill St. about 6 a.m.
“Initial information indicated that someone had entered the residence,” he said.
“Responding units determined that one person had been shot. The person [who was] shot received medical attention and was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment,” he said.
Gardner said the injuries were serious.
“At this point, it is clear that the person who entered the residence is the one who was shot,” Gardner said.
“Because of the nature of the incident, we were called and responded to assist with the investigation,” he said.
“Based on the information we’ve obtained, I can report that several people were at the residence this morning and we are in the process of talking to them to obtain information,” he said.
“I can also report that some of the people involved in this incident were familiar with or knew one another,” he said, adding that investigators are still in the process of gathering information.
“We will be working to determine who owned the weapon, how it got here and exactly who fired the weapon,” Gardner said. He declined to say how many shots were fired.
“We will also be working to determine why or what caused this to happen,” he said, adding that “at this point, we have no reason to believe that anyone else is in danger or that there’s a threat to the public.”
Gardner declined to name any of the people involved. The 2015 property tax commitment posted on the town of Eddington’s website listed the owner of the property as Renee E. Lee Sherburne, though it was not immediately clear if the property has since changed hands.
As part of the investigation, state police towed away a white SUV that had been parked in the driveway of the beige single-family home where the shooting took place.
No one had been charged in connection with the shooting as of Sunday afternoon.
Gardner said investigators would be at the scene throughout the day. He asked anyone with information about the incident to call the Maine State Police barracks in Bangor at 973-3700.
