ALFRED, Maine — A man from New York died Monday afternoon after losing control of his motorcycle on Route 111 in York County, state police said.

Robert Locke, 36, was riding with a group of friends en route to Laconia, New Hampshire, according to Department of Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.

Locke lost control when he swerved to avoid a vehicle that was turning onto Clark Road, McCausland said.

Locke, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown into the roadway and died shortly after arriving at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

Locke’s death marks the fifth fatal motorcycle crash in the state in 2016. There were 10 such crashes in 2015.
