When Biddeford native Brian Dumoulin’s name is inscribed on the Stanley Cup, he will be the first player from Maine to achieve the honor, but he won’t be the first Maine native on the Cup.

Dumoulin helped the Pittsburgh Penguins win the Stanley Cup Sunday night, and another Maine native, Charles “Skip” Thayer of South Paris, was the head athletic trainer for the Penguins when they won the Stanley Cup in 1991 and 1992.

Following a Stanley Cup tradition, the names of the players, coaches, management and club staff are engraved on it. Given that, other Maine natives may have their names on the Stanley Cup besides Dumoulin and Thayer.

Thayer was the head athletic trainer for the Chicago Blackhawks for 18 years before moving to the Penguins in 1988. He spent four years with the Penguins, a season with the the Tampa Bay Lightning and then returned to the Penguins for five seasons.
