FRENCHVILLE, Maine — A Madawaska man escaped serious injury late Saturday when he lost control of his car and struck a house on U.S. Route 1, Cpl. Chuck Michaud of the Maine State Police said Sunday.

Ryan Remalia, 21, was traveling east along U.S. Route 1 in Frenchville shortly before midnight when his 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer went off the roadway and struck the corner of a house, Michaud said. The vehicle came to a rest on its roof after pulling down power and utility wires.

The home was occupied at the time of the crash, but the only person injured was Remalia, who was taken to Northern Maine Medical Center in Fort Kent for treatment of injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Remalia was wearing a seatbelt, which Trooper Matthew Curtin credited with saving his life.

Michaud said that speed was a factor in the crash.

State police were assisted at the scene by U.S. Border Patrol, the Frenchville Fire Department and other emergency medical personnel.
