PORTLAND, Maine — A Portland elementary school principal has been charged with one count of operating under the influence.

South Portland police confirmed that they arrested 55-year-old Dawn Kenniston of Scarborough. Kenniston is the principal at Hall School in Portland.

Police said they found a vehicle stopped in the middle of the road at the intersection of Broadway and Westbrook Street around 8 p.m. June 6. The car had run out of gas.

According to police, officers detected an odor of alcohol when speaking with Kenniston.

She was taken to the Cumberland County Jail and released on bail.

Interim Portland School Superintendent Jeanne Crocker said she had no comment because this was a personnel issue.
