AUGUSTA, Maine — A teenage girl died Tuesday evening when the vehicle she was a passenger in crashed into a culvert on Route 17, police said.

Darrien Allard, 19, of Sidney was heading east around 6:30 p.m. when he lost control and struck the culvert on the side of the road, Augusta Deputy Chief Jared Mills said.

Allard’s passenger, a 17-year-old girl whose identity was withheld, died as a result of her injuries, according to Mills.

Allard and two other passengers, whose names were also not disclosed, were transported to MaineGeneral Hospital for treatment of their injuries, Mills said.

State Police are assisting Augusta police in reconstructing the accident, which remains under investigation.
