SOUTH PARIS, Maine — The Oxford County District Attorney’s Office said Friday afternoon it is dismissing all charges against former SAD 55 employee Zachariah Sherburne.
Sherburne pleaded not guilty to gross sexual assault and sexual abuse of a minor charges on Wednesday.
According to court documents, Sherburne was an ed tech at Sacopee Valley High School when he befriended a 16-year-old student.
Sherburne’s defense attorney said Sherburne’s last day in the classroom was Feb. 11, and the two had sex the day after. The girl became pregnant after the encounter.
His lawyer says because Sherburne wasn’t technically the girl’s teacher at the time, and the age of consent in Maine is 16, their relationship was not illegal.
