HARPSWELL, Maine — Several homes were saved and a 4-acre woods fire contained on an island off the coast of Harpswell Friday, a fire that remains under investigation.
Around 2 p.m., firefighters responded to Sheep Island, and with the help of the U.S. Coast Guard, Maine Forest Rangers and water drops from helicopters, the woods fire was kept away from four homes.
No one was hurt, and firefighters stayed on Sheep Island overnight to monitor for hot spots. Forest ranger photos taken Saturday show the flames came close to homes on the island. The fire remains under investigation.
