PHIPPSBURG, Maine — A Quebec couple riding a motorcycle Saturday afternoon on Route 209 in Phippsburg suffered serious internal injuries after swerving to avoid a head-on collision with a car in their lane.
The Yamaha XVZ13 motorcycle was headed south toward Popham Beach at about 4 p.m. when it approached a crest in the road and swerved to avoid crashing into a 2016 Hyundai sedan driven by Thudi Anubeep, 27, of Key Gardens, New York, Phippsburg police Officer Eric Halpin said Tuesday.
Multiple people reported seeing Anubeep speeding and dangerously passing cars in no-passing zones, according to Halpin.
When the motorcycle met the rental car driven by Anubeep, both swerved, Halpin said, and the 52-year-old male operator of the motorcycle wasn’t able to regain control, causing the motorcycle to slide off the road and into the bushes.
The man and his 53-year-old wife were both wearing helmets, according to Halpin. He was taken to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick, and she was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland, both by Phippsburg ambulance. Their conditions were not available Tuesday.
Anubeep received a summons for driving to endanger, as well as a civil summons for improper passing. A court date was not available on Tuesday.
