BANGOR, Maine — The Family Dollar store on School Street temporarily closed Wednesday after it was struck by a car driven by an elderly local woman, a Bangor police official said.

The woman’s car struck a wall of the store, located at 38 School St. near the Broadway Hannaford, after 11 a.m., breaking through to the restroom inside, Bangor police Lt. Cathy Rumsey said.

Plumbing also may have been damaged, she said.

The store was closed temporarily because of the damage. Shoppers who turned up early Wednesday afternoon were not allowed to enter.

It was not clear Wednesday evening when the store would reopen. Store employees referred questions about the incident to their corporate office, which did not return phone calls seeking information.

Rumsey said that it was not clear what caused the woman to crash into the store. She said that the motorist, a 79-year-old Bangor resident, indicated to police that she was “not sure what happened” when asked about the crash.

The accident report did not indicate if the woman was injured or if she required a trip to the hospital, Rumsey said.
