AUGUSTA, Maine — State police will be heavily patrolling the state’s highways over the busy holiday weekend, looking for everything from speeders to drunk drivers, Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said.

Additional troopers, unmarked cruisers and a state police airplane will be used during the holiday weekend, McCausland said. Those efforts will continue throughout the summer.

Troopers will be searching for aggressive, impaired and distracted drivers and for those who don’t wear their seat belts.

A total of 43 people died in traffic crashes in July and August 2015, and these months are typically the busiest on Maine’s highways throughout the year. 61 people have been killed on Maine’s roads thus far in 2016, compared to 53 at this time last year.

Drivers are urged to allow for extra time to reach destinations and to be alert for traffic backups.
