BREWER, Maine —Two kayakers left their Subaru parked on the ramp of the Brewer municipal boat launch on Friday evening while out for a few hours on the Penobscot River, but the car became submerged as the tide came in.

After witnesses reported seeing the car in the water, Brewer police went to check the car for passengers, according to Cpl. Amy Nickerson, who waded into the water because she was about to go off shift, and in light of a “best case scenario” joked that “it was only fair.”

“People don’t realize how fast the tidal water rises,” Nickerson said.

The vehicle was almost completely submerged when police arrived, with the owners paddling up just as authorities were just finishing towing the car from the water.
