NORRIDGEWOCK, Maine — A Waterville woman died Thursday after apparently falling out of a boat she was riding in along the Kennebec River, officials said.

Barbara York, 53, was a passenger in a 15-foot powerboat driven by Jeffrey Smith, 50, of Norridgewock, according to a statement from the Maine Warden Service.

The incident occurred around 4 p.m. Thursday, according to the warden service.

York and Smith, neither of whom were wearing life jackets, were ejected from the boat and went into the river, according to the warden service. Life jackets were on the boat.

Smith attempted to revive York but were unsuccessful, according to the warden service.

The warden service is investigating the incident as a boating-related fatality and is working with the Somerset County District Attorney’s Office and the chief medical examiner’s office.
