LIMERICK, Maine — A Massachusetts man was critically injured Monday morning when he was struck by a vehicle that drove up onto a sidewalk, according to police.
The vehicle left the scene, but the driver returned a short time later and told police he had been involved in the incident, the York County Sheriff’s Office said Monday in a post on its Facebook page.
According to the statement, John Mullin, 47, of Wilmington, Massachusetts, was struck while walking alongside Route 11 on a section known locally as Washington Street. Mullin, who has been vacationing at a lake house on Pickerel Pond, was knocked unconscious and suffered severe injuries from being struck, police said.
He was taken to Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford and then flown to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he was in critical condition Monday afternoon, police said.
William George, 41, of Limerick drove off from the scene, but witnesses gave police a description of the vehicle that hit Mullin, the sheriff’s department said in the Facebook post.
George returned on foot a short time later to discuss his involvement as police searched for the vehicle, which was located behind a nearby building, police said.
The owner of the vehicle subsequently told police that George did not have permission to use the vehicle, police added.
Police have impounded the vehicle, and the crash is being reconstructed by deputies with the York County and Cumberland County sheriff’s departments.
“The investigation will continue and charges are anticipated,” sheriff’s department officials said in the post.
Additional information, such as the time when the incident occurred and the make and model of the vehicle involved, was not available Monday afternoon.
