BINGHAMTON, New York — The Hartford Yard Goats scored three runs off Taylor Grover and took the series opener from the Portland Sea Dogs 4-2 Friday night in an Eastern League baseball game at NYSEG Stadium.
The two teams are playing the series in Binghamton because Hartford’s ballpark is still under construction.
Portland’s Yoan Moncada, a top Red Sox prospect, homered for the second straight night, tying the game at one when he connected off winning pitcher German Marquez (8-5) in the sixth.
Marquez beat the Sea Dogs for the second straight start, fanning nine over eight innings while giving up seven hits.
Hartford took a 3-1 lead off Grover in its half of the sixth on a two-run triple by Ryan McMahon. Both teams exchanged unearned runs in the seventh.
Lefthander Jalen Beeks had a solid outing for Portland in his fourth Double-A start. He gave up three hits, one run and three walks while striking out five in five innings.
Hartford’s Matt Carasiti worked a perfect ninth for his 25th save.
Moncada and Andrew Benintendi each had two hits.
