PHIPPSBURG, Maine — A 25-year-old man from West Bath was arrested Wednesday night after allegedly assaulting a woman and then refusing to let her leave.

Brandan Gilliam remained at Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset on Thursday morning on $1,000 cash bail, according to a jail official. He is scheduled for arraignment by video Friday morning.

Sagadahoc County deputies went to Bowker Road in Phippsburg just after 10 p.m. Wednesday after a woman reported learning in a phone call with her daughter that she was in trouble, Chief Deputy Brett Strout said Thursday.

“Essentially, Gilliam was there with the victim at a residence on Bowker Road, and the woman managed to call her mother,” Strout said. “While she was on the phone with her mother, the mother could overhear her saying things that indicated an assault was taking place, and was able to verify that he wasn’t letting her leave.”

The alleged victim, a 25-year-old woman from Bath, was taken to Mid Coast Hospital for evaluation.

Gilliam was charged with domestic violence assault and criminal restraint.
