WALDOBORO, Maine — Multiple crews battled an early morning house fire in Waldoboro.

The call came in about 2:30 a.m. Thursday for a fire at 99 Atlantic Highway. That’s Route 1 in Waldoboro.

Waldoboro Assistant Fire Chief Bill Maxwell said the homeowners made it out safely.

“They are very fortunate. When I arrived on scene, the house was fully engulfed, and coming down the road, I could see it for probably a quarter of a mile away,” said Maxwell.

However, one dog did die in the fire.

Maxwell said the home was too far gone to try to save.

“It was very intense, but they saved the barn on the other side, the barn with personal belongings. We focused our initial water on that, so that wouldn’t catch on fire,” Maxwell said.

At least six different departments assisted in fighting the fire.

An investigator with the state fire marshal’s office will be at the home later to determine a cause, but Maxwell said all signs point to an accident.
