BRIDGTON, Maine — At least one person is facing charges in Bridgton after surveillance cameras capture them tearing down American flags.

Bridgton police said this is an ongoing investigation. So far one person has been charged with criminal mischief and they say others could be as well. Police haven’t released any names.

Police were able to find one suspect after getting surveillance video from a nearby business and posting it on their Facebook page.

In it, someone is tearing down one of the flags on Main Street around 1:30 a.m. Saturday.

Police say six flags were taken down Friday night into Saturday morning.

The town puts the flags on light poles for the summer to show patriotism and support for troops and veterans.

Bridgton police chief Rick Stillman said it is very upsetting to see that vandals chose the town’s American flags as their target.

“It is very disheartening. I have two sons that are in the military … very disheartening to see people disrespecting our flag the way this person did and very likely someone else or other people,” Stillman said.

The town has already replaced the flags that were stolen.

They ask if anyone has any information about the thefts they call Bridgton police.

They say this could be connected to other vandalism in town.
